A new wildfire has been confirmed northeast of the Sault on Saturday, October 12.

Sault Ste. Marie 19 is a 0.1 hectare fire not under control. It is located 200 metres north of Mission Road, and about 500 metres east of Little Goulais River, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) reports.

At the time of the Saturday update, there are 10 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region; one is not under control, one is being held and eight are being observed, AFFES said.

The fire hazard is predominantly low to moderate across the Northeast Region.

AFFES was reminding the public to use caution when performing outdoor burning. To dispose of yard waste and woody debris, people were encouraged you to use methods such as composting or the landfill.

Fires are to be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and are to be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise. Always have tools/water adequate to contain the fire at the site, AFFES said.

For rules for safe outdoor burning, consult the full set of  Outdoor Burning Regulations.
