At 8:30 a.m. Monday, city staff were on hand to receive the first nominations for the 2022 municipal election.
But Ward 3 Coun. Matthew Shoemaker was the only electoral wannabe who made it to the Ron A. Irwin Civic Centre to file the needed papers.
Shoemaker showed up with campaign aides Hudson and Maxwell, and as expected, forked over $200 and 25 endorsement signatures to run for mayor.
He had previously announced his intention to seek the office on March 29.
Ozzie Grandinetti, a former councillor in what was then Ward 6, has also signalled his desire to run for mayor but didn't file papers today.
There were no local first-day nominations for City Council, Algoma District School Board, Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire de district du Grand Nord de l'Ontario or Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario.
Nominations close at 2 p.m. on Aug. 19.
The 2022 municipal elections take place on Monday, Oct. 24.
