City staff are trying to get more West Side traffic lights removed.

Carl Rumiel, a city design and construction engineer, will recommend at Monday's City Council meeting that traffic signals at the Huron-Wellington intersection be removed during this summer's reconstruction of the Fort Creek aqueduct along Wellington Street West from St. Andrew's Terrace to Carmen's Way.

Warrant studies done at that intersection have shown that neither traffic lights nor all-way stop signs are needed, Rumiel says.

"Traffic specialist CIMA+ did a review of the intersection as part of the Fort Creek project and confirm that the three-legged intersection will function well with stop control on Huron Street," Rumiel says in a report to Mayor Christian Provenzano and city councillors.

"CIMA+'s report did make some suggestions regarding possible restrictions to on-site parking to enhance sight distances which the city should implement," he said.

"Since the intersection will require reconstruction due to the Fort Creek aqueduct replacement, it would be wise to restore the intersection without the traffic signals at this time rather than replace them with new signals."

Eliminating the traffic lights would reduce the aqueduct replacement budget by about $40,000.

Monday's City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday starting at 4:30 p.m.
