Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services is encouraging the public to test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in their residences at least once a month — and they will even show you how to it.

With their In-Service Smoke and CO Alarm Program kicking off this week, firefighters will be going door-to-door across the city spreading awareness about fire safety.

The program starts this evening with firefighters knocking on doors starting at 6 p.m., and continuing on a Monday to Thursday schedule through the summer, the service said in a news release.

“The purpose of the program is to spread awareness and answer any questions citizens may have about fire safety,” public education officer Aaron Gravelle said.

“We are not writing ticket violations. We just want everyone to be safe and aware of the protections systems they have or should have in their homes.”

When the firefighters arrive at your home, they will offer fire safety information with awareness pamphlets, discussions about alarms, exiting and home escape plans, as well as offer to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home.

As part of the testing, firefighters will be checking the date on the back of alarms to make sure they have not expired.

The program will run until Sept. 26. This will be followed by Fire Prevention Week starting on Oct. 6.
