Northern Credit Union Ltd. has been granted an official plan amendment allowing it to build a new three-storey head office building at 280 McNabb Street near Willow Avenue.

The 27,000-square-foot structure will be adjacent to the credit union's existing 8,896-square-foot office building at 264 McNabb, which will be vacated.

The City's official plan discourages new office buildings outside the downtown core.

However, Northern Credit Union bought the vacant property at 280 McNabb in 1994 for sole purpose of erecting a new office building there.

At that time, the City had no restrictions on office buildings outside the core area.

As a condition of approval, the City will ask the company to grant it a three-metre strip along McNabb Street for future road-widening purposes.
