A fire reported on the eighth floor of an East Street high rise turned out to be just a whole lot of smoke.
Stan Martynick, platoon chief with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services, said a 911 call came in at 2:50 p.m. reporting a fire on the eighth floor of an apartment building at 70 East Street.
All fire vehicles, including an aerial truck, arrived on scene shortly after the call came in and Martynuck sent five firefighters to the unit.
"We took the elevators up, took control of the elevators and found a pot on the stove that filled the eighth floor unit with smoke," said Martynuck.
Firefighters on scene were prepared to tie into the stand pipe system to draw water had there been open flames and one truck crew was preparing to feed additional water into the system from an adjacent fire hydrant.
“Luckily, it wasn’t a fire,” he said.
Firefighters worked to ventilate the unit of moderate smoke, said Martynuck.
