A new fire burning north of Chapleau is one of just three active wildfires in the northeastern Ontario fire region as of midweek, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services said Wednesday.
Chapleau 17 is a 0.1 hectare fire that was not under control as of Wednesday afternoon. The fire is 100 metres west of Woods Lake.
At the time of its latest update, the firefighting service said one of the other two fires was under control while the other was being held.
As the official forest fire season nears its close at the end of the month, the fire hazard is low to moderate across the Northeast Region, AFFES said.
The situation was different in the northwest region of the province, where there remained 12 active wildland fires as of Wednesday: three under control and nine being observed, according to Ontario.ca.
"This fall, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning. In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, we encourage you to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill," the firefighting service said.
"If you must burn, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations."
