New scraper to improve water treatment at Tenaris

Tenaris has a new scraper that it says will improve the treatment of water moving through its hot rolling mill.

The automated machine separates solid particles that settle at the bottom of the scale pit of the water treatment plant and moves them to one side of the tank for removal by another machine.

After that, the wastewater is pumped through filters for cleaning so it can be reused in the hot rolling mill. 

The $1.6 million project is part of a $6.75 million multi-year environmental investment to modernize the facility’s water management system.

Tenaris is improving the treatment of water moving through the hot rolling mill at its Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, plant with the installation of new scraper.

The $1.6M CAD project forms part of a $6.75M CAD multi-year environmental investment to modernize the facility’s water management system.

The newly installed scraper is an automated machine that works by separating solid particles that settle at the bottom of the scale pit of the water treatment plant and moves them to one side of the tank for removal by another machine. The wastewater is subsequently pumped through filters for cleaning and is returned for reuse in the hot rolling mill. 

“The upgrade to our filtration system allows us to better treat and clean wastewater stemming from our manufacturing process, and it underscores our continued efforts to operate with care for the environment. The new scraper is one phase of a long-term investment to improve the performance of our water management system,” said Tenaris Health, Safety, and Environment Director for Tenaris in Canada, Gianluca Greco.

The installation of the new scraper was carried out during Tenaris’s annual extraordinary maintenance in which production is temporarily paused at the plant over the course of two-three weeks to assess plant equipment and perform necessary maintenance and preventive work. In addition to the scraper, automation, system and equipment upgrades and repairs were implemented across lines in the hot rolling mill, heat treatment, finishing and premium threading area, and the ERW.

Local contractors from DC Communications, GFL, ISM, NATT, SIS, Steel Speed, Stobie Mechanical and Welding, URSO, Viacore, Wajax, and WB Melback Corporation supported Tenaris teams across engineering, operations, maintenance, and its procurement partner Exiros, for this year’s extraordinary maintenance project.

Tenaris has invested more than $200M CAD across its operations in Canada in the last four years, with the majority at its industrial centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, including approximately $35M CAD as part of its annual preventative maintenance program.
