Sault Ste. Marie is getting 18 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
It’s part of the province’s plan to increase access to the chargers outside of large urban centres.
They will be located at:
- 4 new chargers at John Rhodes Community Centre
- 4 new chargers at Walmart Sault Ste. Marie
- 6 new chargers at Motel 6 Sault Ste. Marie
- 4 new chargers at YNCU Sault Ste. Marie
“With the increase in EV drivers across the province, and in the north, it is important for people to feel confident that they can find reliable, publicly accessible charging stations in their community,” says MPP Ross Romano in a news release.
Each new EV charging site will include Level 2 charging stations, Level 3 charging stations, or a combination of the two.
The chargers are part of the government’s $63 million EV ChargeON Program Community Sites Stream.
Businesses, not-for-profits, municipalities, Indigenous communities and organizations, along with broader public sector organizations like hospitals, universities, and colleges were invited to submit funding applications.
There are more than 201,000 electric vehicles on the road in Ontario.
