New building 'coming along well', says PUC boss (11 photos)

Construction of the new Sault Ste. Marie PUC headquarters is on time and on budget, says President and Chief Executive Officer for PUC Inc. Brian Curran. He says PUC is planning to start moving in to the new $20.2 million building in mid-December.

Construction of the new Sault Ste. Marie PUC headquarters is on time and on budget, says President and Chief Executive Officer for PUC Inc. Brian Curran.

He says PUC is planning to start moving in to the new $20.2 million building in mid-December.

"It's going to help a lot," Curran said. "It's going to be much easier to work together."

Currently PUC services are located in three buildings, none of which really do what the PUC needs them to do.

The worst of the three is the garage.

It's too small for PUC to service it's fleet of larger vehicles.

"For anything that needs a hoist, we have to send them out," Curran said. "The services in the new building will be much better."

The new headquarters will be over 100,000 square feet and the office portion of the building is built to a gold LEED-standard certification.

As much as possible, the building is built with reused materials, is designed to use natural light in work spaces and is composed of local building materials.

"It's very functional," said Curran. "Nice but quite functional."

Construction on the building began in October 2011 and part of the reason its progressing so well is the mild winter of 2011/2012, he said.

It meant crews efforts weren't hampered much by bad weather.

"I'm impressed with how well and how fast the work is progressing," he said.

PUC Inc. plans to move into the new building department by department over a few weeks.
