A new clinic specializing in the treatment of substance use disorders opened in downtown Sault Ste. Marie earlier this week, and it’s already seen the demand locally.
Recovery North says it’s already taken on about 130 clients for its outpatient services since opening its doors at 673 Queen Street East this past Monday.
“New intakes, they can come in and start immediately - all walk-ins are welcome,” said Nicole Atkinson, a registered practical nurse with Recovery North. “Also, people are able to transfer from other clinics. It’s a very, very simple process that can be done when they get here.”
Recovery North is offering the following services:
- initial intake
- screening
- supervised urine testing
- treatment contract
- addiction counselling
- regular follow-ups with physicians and health-care providers
- referrals to additional counselling
- psychiatric assessment
- Hepatitis C pre-test and post-test counselling
- aftercare treatment
- on-site pharmacy for dispensing medications
Recovery North says the clinic will remain open over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Because of the pandemic, people are resorting to substances to cope with what’s going on in our world today, so there has been an increase of usage because of the pandemic,” said Atkinson. “So opening up a clinic in the middle of this pandemic is just to better support these folks who are struggling with substance use.”
