Memorial established for 'Charlotte', the Sault's latest homicide victim (3 photos)

Police continue investigation after body discovered in James Street neighbourhood Monday

A couple of people were seen paying their respects at a makeshift memorial in the 100 block of James Street as police continue its investigation into the Sault’s latest homicide.

Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre General Manager Ron Sim says that he first saw 'Charlotte' - the woman's surname isn't known at this time - come into the soup kitchen in January of last year.

“I believe at that point she was fairly new to town, because she kept asking me where she could go for different things,” said Sim. “At that point, she didn’t live in the area - she must have lived somewhere, I believe, either on Gore or somewhere in that area, and then she ended up moving to Al’s place [Al’s Corner Pub] later in the year.”

Charlotte was a regular at the soup kitchen, going there nearly every day for lunch. Sim last saw her the Friday before her body was discovered.

“It was very unsettling for myself, considering we had seen her on the Friday, and she was in an upbeat mood, and she had brought one of the other guys from the rooming house over there with her to get a lunch," he said.

Sault Ste. Marie Police has yet to make an arrest in the homicide case. Sim tells SooToday that names of potential suspects have been floating around the neighbourhood over the past couple of days.

“We had heard numerous different names being whispered around,” said Sim. “But I mean, rumours fly so fast when these kind of things happen.”

He’s also noticed there is a group of people who rely upon the soup kitchen daily that haven’t shown up at the soup kitchen since Monday.

“I think it’s because of the police presence at this point,” he said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Marc Dubie by phone at 705-949-6300 ext. 114.

Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers by Phone at 705-942-7867 or 1-800-222-8477, or online.
