Sault resident Pat Mackan is a proud Day 1 host in SPACES, the Sault’s very own social network.

Pat Mackan has lived in the Sault his whole life and music has been part of that every single day. So, what better person to take the helm of the Musicians space?

SPACES is SooToday’s social media network, and with Mackan at the helm, he shines the spotlight on the local scene, championing our best musicians and uniting the community around our shared love of good tracks.

“I really want to highlight the fantastic local musicians that we have right here in the Sault. I want to post about their shows, our local venues and other great music that is coming our way.”

Mackan attended Alexander Henry High School back in the 70s, where they had a radio and television club. The radio station was a closed-circuit system that would play music during the lunch hour and also handle morning announcements about school activities.

“This is where my interest in being a DJ grew, over the four years of high school,” Mackan explained.

“Later on, I had the opportunity to work for Lou Turco and the Music people, playing tunes for social gatherings such as weddings, school dances and many other social events.”

He added, “Before I left the business and hung up the mic, I worked at Misty's Fifties, which was a memorable time for me. I made many friendships along the way and the bar is still a part of my everyday life. Shout out to Lori and her fantastic staff!”

Mackan also enjoys posting about new up-and-coming artists he has discovered. “I want to do some interviews with musicians who are performing here, as well,” he said. “So, I want to add that into the Musicians space.”

Mackan’s love for the Sault seems to be inherited.

“My father worked in the transportation industry and as a bus driver and always greeted his passengers with a hearty hello and have a nice day. The people are kind and go out of their way to help others when the need arises,” he said.

Mackan is vocal in his appreciation of SPACES. “It’s a fantastic idea. Before [Bill C18] eliminated all news on social, most people were getting news on Facebook . . . so this is great for our community,” he said.

“It’s long overdue, and adds another voice to what the Sault is, what we do up here, what is there to do?”

He added, “SPACES is a great way to educate people about everything and everyone here. For example, we have the Bon Soo Winter Carnival, with tons of great music. It’s one of the biggest festivals in this part of Ontario!”

Mackan hopes that SPACES will continue to grow. He is pleased with the interaction and politeness of the network so far, and appreciates that it is local. \

“There is a lot going on here, and it’s wonderful to have somewhere to showcase it all, and to interact with others who are passionate about it as well.”
