McDougall Energy Inc. hopes to brighten the holidays for local families and individuals with a donation of $10,000 to the Sault Star Santa Fund for Christmas Cheer. The donation will help Christmas Cheer provide a Christmas dinner, plus gifts for the children and families in need, to more than 1600 deserving families and individuals from Sault Ste. Marie and area.
“This incredible donation will greatly enhance our program as we provide for the less fortunate in our community and the surrounding area. In the words of Rick Hanson, McDougall Energy is indeed a ‘Difference Maker’,” said Diane Marshall, Christmas Cheer Convener.
Now in its 50th year of operation, Christmas Cheer set an ambitious goal to raise $100,000 in 2019; the cost to run the Christmas Cheer program is approximately $90,000 - $100,000 per year. With generous donations from community members and organizations, including McDougall Energy, Christmas Cheer is one big step closer to meeting this goal.
“Christmas Cheer is a loved and respected charity in Sault Ste. Marie and area that helps bring hope and joy to well-deserving individuals and families during the holidays,” said Jennifer McDougall, Director of Human Resources, McDougall Energy. “McDougall Energy is proud to support Christmas Cheer to help ease any financial stress that may be brought on during this time of year and allow for families to make memories and spend more quality time together.”
This year’s delivery day for Christmas Cheer was on December 18, which served recipients from Batchawana First Nations to Bruce Mines. Many hard-working individuals dedicated approximately 32,000 hours to help make “the magic” happen for this volunteer-run program.
Christmas Cheer is funded by the Sault Star Santa Fund. Since 1919, the Sault Star Santa Fund has helped provide gifts to thousands of local families who may find it difficult to enjoy the holiday season due to any disadvantages and challenges they face. This year, Christmas Cheer was located at the former Sears at Station Mall, and volunteers attended a table collecting donations near Peoples Jewellers. Donations can be made at The Sault Star, at 145 Old Garden River Rd., weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Dec. 31, 2019.
