Mayoral candidate responds to Facebook post

A man running to be the city’s mayor says he plans to clean up his personal Facebook account after a questionable post was pointed out by other social media users.

A man running to be the city’s mayor says he plans to clean up his personal Facebook account after a questionable post was pointed out by other social media users.

Robin Coull, who filed his nomination papers this week, goes by PlaysWith Squirrels on Facebook and told SooToday.com that people shouldn’t take his postings seriously.

The offending post, which until mid afternoon on Tuesday could be viewed by the public on Coull’s Facebook wall, read ‘The lapdance is so much better when the stripper is crying,’

The July 16 status update is a reference, Coull said, to a song of a similar name by the often satirical music group Bloodhound Gang, though several other Facebook users questioned whether the post is appropriate from a mayoral candidate, prompting SooToday.com to contact Coull.

“It has nothing to do with anything. It’s just a song,” said Coull, 28, who works as a security guard.

Coull said he sees how the post could be “misconstrued” but he said it doesn’t reflect his views on women.

“I’m actually in the process of deleting and cleaning all that up,” said Coull.

As of mid afternoon on Tuesday, Coull’s Facebook privacy settings were changed such that posts to his wall were no longer publicly visible.

Coull, who is featured in a YouTube video posing on the steps of the Civic Centre dressed as the comic book character Batman, acknowledged he is “a bit of a joker,” but insisted he is a serious contender for the mayor’s seat.

A total of five candidates have filed papers to run for mayor in the Oct. 27 election - incumbent Mayor Debbie Amaroso, Ted Johnston, Austin Williams, Heather Cook and Coull.
