An iconic Canadian fast food chicken restaurant will soon be opening in Sault Ste. Marie.
Mary Brown's Chicken is advertising for workers on Indeed.com for an eventual 248 Northern Ave. E. location, in the same plaza as Winners and Metro.
Many in the Sault still refer to it as the K-Mart or Zellers plaza, years after those businesses closed.
City construction records show a $220,000 building permit was issued late last month for interior tenant improvements for the new chicken eatery, including new finishes, lighting, electrical and mechanical services, as well as new food service equipment, furniture and washrooms.
The job posting says the expected start date for employees is Jan. 6.
On Monday, work was being done inside a vacant unit adjacent to Firehouse Subs and Osmow's at the pad site in the plaza, with chicken-themed wallpaper on the windows.
Mary Brown's opened its first restaurant in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1969, eventually spreading to more than 300 locations across the country. Currently, the closest Mary Brown's location to the Sault is in Sudbury.
