The death of a Cambridge, Ontario family physician after a bear attack last September north of Chapleau may have saved the life of a man who was similarly attacked on Thursday near Wawa.

55-year-old Tom Tilley from Waterloo, Ontario had read about the death of Dr. Jacqueline Perry after she was attacked by a black bear in Missinaibi Lake Provincial Park, about 80 kilometres north of Chapleau.

When Tilly read how Dr. Perry's husband had tried to get the bear off her using a Swiss Army knife, he went out and bought himself a six-inch hunting knife.

And on Thursday of this week, he used that knife to kill a bear that attacked him and his dog Sam on a portage to Abbey Lake in the Wawa area.

Today's edition of the Kitchener-Waterloo Record contains an interesting account of the story.
