The City of Sault Ste. Marie along with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) recognized the economic impact and benefits of being a host gaming site at tonight’s council meeting.

OLG’s Senior Vice President of People and Culture, Esther Zdolec, along with a contingent of OLG team members presented a cheque to the city in the amount of $1,449,273 representing the city’s portion of gaming revenue from slots and live table games for the 2022-23 fiscal year.  To date, the city has received nearly $34 million for hosting Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie.

This revenue for the 2022-23 fiscal year has been reinvested in the community including assisting with asset management projects for several municipal facilities and a portion has also been used to offset the municipal tax levy.

“I would like to thank the OLG for their continued support of our community. The revenue generated through our host gaming site agreement plays a pivotal role in funding public services and community facilities. We appreciate the OLG's ongoing support and their employees' continued involvement in our community,” said Mayor Mathew Shoemaker.

“OLG has been a proud contributor to successes in the Sault Ste. Marie region for over 30 years with important economic and community-based contributions to the city and surrounding area,” said Esther Zdolec, OLG’s Senior Vice President of People and Culture.

“Sharing a portion of gaming revenue with the city since 1999 has had farreaching impacts, spanning essential local sectors such as healthcare, education, economic development and community festivals, enhancing the quality of life in Sault Ste. Marie, and in fact, enriching the entire province. It is worth highlighting that 100% of OLG’s profits are reinvested in the province for the betterment of the people of Ontario. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the hardworking team at Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie, whose invaluable contribution makes life in Sault Ste. Marie even more fulfilling and rewarding.”

The City of Sault Ste. Marie looks forward to further strengthening the community by continuing to work closely with stakeholders like OLG.
