Local veterans take advantage of monthly brunch program

United Way’s Harvest Algoma and Algoma Veterans offer brunch on a monthly basis, providing veterans with home-cooked meal and opportunity to socialize

Last Saturday, 17 local veterans attended the first-ever brunch hosted by Harvest Algoma and Algoma Veterans, where they enjoyed eggs, bacon, sausages, Johnny cakes, coffee and tea.

The brunch is a part of the monthly brunch program that provides home-cooked meals and access to Harvest Algoma’s food pantry program.

United Way’s Harvest Algoma Food Resource Centre strives to reduce food insecurity and promote community development through partnerships and program development.

Following this philosophy, Harvest Algoma has recently joined forces with Algoma Veterans, a charity providing support to local veterans, to offer a monthly brunch program, providing these individuals with a hardy home-cooked meal, access to Harvest Algoma’s food pantry program and an opportunity to socialize and engage with each other.

This past Saturday, Feb. 25, United Way’s Harvest Algoma and Veterans Algoma welcomed 17 local veterans for the first-ever brunch, which included a delicious meal made up of eggs, bacon, sausages, Johnny cakes, coffee and tea.

All the food provided was by Rome’s Your Independent Grocer’s food rescue and donation program. As this program continues, we hope the numbers will increase, offering more support to those seeking it.

If you are a veteran and would like to join us for these monthly brunches or are seeking support, please reach out to Algoma Veterans. If you would like to donate and help support either of these agencies or this new program, please visit algomaveterans.org or uwssmalgoma.ca.
