Learn how to add a loved one to new registry for vulnerable locals who may wander

Information event scheduled for Oct. 11; registry gives first responders information about people with autism, dementia, an intellectual disability or other vulnerability

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District will be hosting a Wandering/Vulnerable Person Registry Day next week.

Slated for Oct. 11 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Alzheimer Society office on Great Northern Road, the event will help those without access to the resources needed to access the tool.

Alzheimer Society staff will be available at the event to help with registering.

The registry was initially announced in the spring and is aimed at helping first responders deal with local residents who are vulnerable and/or known to wander.

Information required to register includes:

  • name of wandering/vulnerable person
  • date of birth, address, and phone number
  • physical descriptors including marks, scars, and tattoos
  • emergency contact information
  • methons of approach and/or de-escalation techniques
  • objects of attractions that interest the wandering/vulnerable person
  • medical concerns
