Prime minister Justin Trudeau is at Algoma Steel this morning to show his support for the local steel industry.
The stop in Sault Ste. Marie is a part of a Canadian tour of regions that could suffer the most as a result of any U.S. imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum.
SooToday sat down with the Prime Minister for an interview this morning.
“There is a real awareness of how important it is to stand up for steelworkers, and that’s been at the heart of what I’ve been doing over the past weeks and past months from the very beginning with the president, when we knew that he was coming in with a certain perspective on trade that unfortunately might impact negatively on Canada,” Trudeau told SooToday.
“We’ve been, you know, laying track and demonstrating that standing up for Canadian workers is what we’re going to do, but it’s not standing up against the U.S., it’s standing up with the U.S. because the more we work together, the better we do on both sides of the border.”
Trudeau met with steelworkers early this morning at No. 2 gate and will take part in a brief tour of the steel plant and participate in a roundtable discussion with local steel industry leaders before departing for Regina, Sask., later this morning.
