As we near the 23rd of May, gardeners in our community are chewing their fingernails in anticipation of the annual Plant Sale Extravaganza.

This year the Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society is teaming up with the Allard Street Community Garden and Clean North to host their main fundraiser at a new location: the community garden located at 105 Allard St., next to the Canadian Red Cross.

This upcoming Saturday morning, whatever the weather, everyone will be on the lookout for plants of all kinds.

Besides local greenhouses and nurseries, plant sales are a rich source of passalong plants--those varieties that lend so well to dividing--and the occasional rare or hard-to-find variety.

According to Suzanne Hanna, Horticultural Society Co-President, “Plant sale fever usually appears in May and lasts until early fall. Those gardeners affected by it show obvious signs of having the disease. Their cheeks are usually flushed, their eyes are glazed and their driving is definitely erratic as they speed towards the site of a featured sale. They are usually sleep-deprived because they are constantly making lists in their heads about what they are looking for.”

This plant sale supports a wide variety of community activities and programs delivered by the local Hort Society and Clean North and offers free gardening advice, demonstrations and handouts as well as children’s activities.

Gardeners can sometimes pick up gently used items at the Nearly New Table as well.

Vegetable seedlings, annuals, perennials, herbs, trees and shrubs are normally potted and labeled for easy identification and are very reasonably priced.

The sale starts at its 8 am designated time so come prepared. Be sure to carry cash (small bills are a godsend) or a check book in your pocket along with a pen and line the back of your trunk with plastic in advance.

The SSM Horticultural Society will have memberships on hand for sale. They offer monthly meetings, special events and access to discounts at local and area businesses. Clean North will also offer a selection of trees as well as their rain barrels, bat houses and coir.

For those interested, the Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society’s Annual Plant Sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 23 from 8 am to 12 noon and will be held at their new location--the Allard St. Community Garden located at 105 Allard. St. RAIN OR SHINE
