International Bridge traffic up more than 25% last month

Traffic for calendar year-to-date as of Feb. 29 was up 22 per cent, International Bridge Administration says

The number of vehicles travelling between Ontario and Michigan crossing over the St. Marys River continues to climb.

Traffic on the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie was up 26% for the month of February – or by more than 14,000 crossings – compared to the same month last year.

That's according to numbers released today by the International Bridge Administration, which said one-way traffic crossings of the bridge between the two Saults totaled 68,952 for the month.

The difference in crossings comparing 2024 to 2023 is an increase of 14,212.

Meanwhile, traffic for the calendar year-to-date as of Feb. 29 was 135,507.

This represents a year-to-date increase of 22.2% compared to 2023, the bridge administration said.

The bridge has processed 105.6 million bridge crossings since 1962.

Here are February's numbers for one-way crossings by vehicle type and the percentage change from February 2023:

  • Full-Fare Passenger Cars: 28,721 / 23%
  • Commuter Fare: 34,280 / 36%
  • Car Pulling Trailers: 648 / -35.5%
  • Commercial Trucks: 5,303 / 2.5%
