Dignitaries and members of the media were treated to a preview of the inside of the new West End Community Centre today.
The 46,000 square feet of indoor turf was the star of the show.
"The way they installed it was really quite remarkable," said City Commissioner of Community Services Nick Apostle. "There was only a 1/4 inch tolerance in the level of the whole field."
The turf is created to mimic that of outdoor fields to minimize injuries, he said.
It's designed so cleats will slide a bit through the sand and underlay rather than get stuck and cause the running player to fall.
Apostle also reminded visitors that the West End Community Centre will be open for a public viewing on Friday from 5 ro 9 p.m. and that the Stanley Cup will be there as part of this week's Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association (CARHA) World Cup tournament.
