A coroner’s inquest will examine the death of an inmate who passed away nearly three years ago at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre.

Jordan Paim, 30, died on July 20, 2021 while in custody — which means an inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

“The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Paim’s death,” said a news release issued Friday by the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General. “The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.”

The inquest was announced today by Dr. Harry Mikael Voogjarv, Ontario’s regional supervising coroner for the north region. The news release does not say why it took nearly three years to announce the inquest.

Details regarding the date and location of the inquest will be released at a later date.

An inquest is a public hearing conducted by a coroner before a jury of five community members, with the goal of informing the public about the circumstances of a death.

"Although the jury’s conclusions are not binding, it is hoped that any recommendations suggested, if implemented, will prevent further deaths," says the coroner's website.

In December 2020, seven months before he died, Paim was arrested by Sault Police after a violent incident at a McNabb Street residence.

He was accused of striking a victim with a shotgun, demanding money and firing off a shot inside the residence.
