Iconic rusted King Street sign to hit the scrap heap

The sign that until today hung at the back of Victor Mann Florist may have been over 120 years old

A vintage sign that was a favourite subject for some local photographers was plucked from its long-time King Street location and headed for the scrap heap on Tuesday.

The metal Mann Florist sign at the rear of the business stood for decades on King Street. Google Earth images taken as far back as 2007 show the metal sign was a local symbol of urban decay even back then.

A 2018 feature story by SooToday's Darren Taylor said the sign at the back of the store was original to the 119 Huron St. store that opened in 1902. The sign was moved to King Street when the business moved to its current Queen Street location in 1962.

Workers from Classic Signs pulled the barely legible rusted sign down on Tuesday and removed the equally rusted pole it hung from. The sign was removed unceremoniously on the back of a truck.
