Hunter fined $7K for shooting at moose on a road

Hunter failed to take reasonable consideration for people in the area and anyone who could have been travelling on the roadway

An Ontario man has been fined $7,000 — and stripped of his hunting licence for two years — after pleading guilty to shooting a bull moose on a road.

Remo Iacobelli of Camlachie, Ont., near Sarnia, recently pleaded guilty in a Red Lake courtroom to careless use of a firearm while hunting.

Court heard that on Oct. 9, 2022, a conservation officer initiated an investigation into a moose that was killed along Shanty Road, near Ear Falls, Ont.

The investigation found that Iacobelli fired several shots at a bull moose while he and the moose were on the road, failing to take reasonable consideration for people in the area and anyone who could have been travelling on the roadway.

Along with the hefty fine and licence suspension, Iacobelli is required to retake the hunter education course.

"The Ontario government is safeguarding the public against hunters who carelessly hunt while on a roadway," says a news release issued Friday by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
