The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society is offering some reminders on how to keep your pets safe and warm during the current cold spell.

“Limit outside exposure, and practice door-safety if you have animals who are prone to door-dash or bolt!” the local humane society said in a Facebook post.

Cats may seek warmth under the hood of your vehicle. "Knock a few times before starting your engine to give them time to safely escape. If you do find a cat outside, please bring them in somewhere while you attempt to find the owner,” the post said.

A quick potty break is all that most pets should be outside for in these temperatures. “Check their paws when you bring them back in for ice or salt that may be stuck.

“Make sure your pet’s tags and microchip have updated info, so if they are found they can be reunited with you as soon as possible.”

If your pet goes missing, call the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society to file a report. If you do find an animal outside, bring them inside if you can, the post said.

“Try to locate their owner using ID tags or searching local lost/found pet groups, and give us a call so we can create a found report - and connect them with their owners if they’ve been reported missing.”
