**************************** Police seize contraband cigarettes

MATTAWA, ON - Mattawa OPP seized over 750 cartons of contraband cigarettes (shown) on Friday, May 1 during a RIDE check on Highway 17 in Papineau-Cameron Township, Ontario.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., two Mattawa OPP officers were conducting RIDE checks on Highway 17 in Papineau-Cameron Township when they stopped a motor vehicle.

The motorist was travelling from the Montreal area heading west to Calgary, Alberta.

One of the officers noted evidence of a speed measuring warning device (radar detector), and upon further investigation it was revealed that the vehicle contained over 750 cartons of contraband cigarettes with an estimated street value in excess of $22,500, 14 grams of hashish, and a large amount of cash.

Charged is Fernand Luc Bergeron, 40 years old, of Calgary, Alberta with:

- Possession of unmarked cigarettes, under the Tobacco Tax Act. - Possession of unmarked cigarettes for the purpose of sale, under the Tobacco Tax Act. - Possession schedule II cannabis resin - over 1 gram, under Controlled Drug Substance Act (CDSA), s.4 (1).

Bergeron is to appear in Mattawa for Court on June 30.
