45 per cent of incoming high school students have over 80 percent average

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (July 2, 2013) - The number of students accepting their offers of admission to Algoma University with entrance averages above 80 percent is higher this year than in any year previous, according to numbers released today by the university.

Algoma University will be handing out entrance scholarships to 65 students this year, up from 46 in 2012.

This increase in students with averages above 80 percent is indicative of a trend towards stronger students choosing Algoma University, both here in Sault Ste. Marie and from other parts of the province.

"Some of this city's best and brightest students are choosing to stay in Sault Ste. Marie and study at Algoma University," said Kevin Hemsworth, Algoma University's director of marketing and communications. "These students are turning down very lucrative scholarships from other Ontario universities to study here. They have heard our message about getting a big education from the smallest university in Ontario, and they want to be a part of it.

The university's Scholarships and Bursaries Program boasts some of the best entrance scholarships in the province for students with averages of 80 percent or higher.

Students with an 80 percent or higher average can receive one of three different scholarships: the Silver Award valued at $6,000; the Gold Award valued at $10,000, or the Platinum Award, valued $12,000.

Each award is renewable for up to four years.

According to Tyler Wilding, one of the university's top incoming students, choosing Algoma University was a financially sound decision.

"Going to Algoma U allows me to save quite a lot on my education, with the university offering the highest of all entrance scholarships in Ontario," he said. "I was also intrigued about the small class atmosphere."

The number of Platinum level award winners (students with an average over 90 percent) is also up.

Fourteen students have earned that award, up from four in 2012.

In total, over 45 percent of the university's incoming students are entering the university with an average above 80 percent.

The number of applicants ranking the university as their top choice on the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) application is also up.

One hundred and eighty-three students chose the university as their number one option in January 2013, an increase of 18.1 percent over January 2012.

More students are also enrolling in a variety of programs, including newer programs such as the university's honours biology and honours social work programs.

With more programs gaining honours status, the University's continued program development is helping drive growth and attract top students.
