With rain on the way, the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority (SSMRCA) has issued a flood outlook statement.

A special weather statement is in effect calling for periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms on Tuesday.

Environment Canada says rainfall rates of 30 to 50 mm per hour are possible, with a total amount of 50 to 100 mm.

SSMRCA says local rivers, creeks and streams are currently at normal levels, but that amount of rain, along with potential high-intensity thunderstorms, will likely generate substantial runoff.

“This may increase the risk of overland flow and localized flooding in low-lying areas, regions with poor drainage, and urbanized zones,” the statement said.

“It is crucial to note that water in rivers, streams, and channels will be fast flowing during and after the rainfall event,” SSMRCA added.

The conservation authority is urging people to keep themselves and their children and pets away from all waterways and flood control channels.

“Fast-moving water and slippery stream banks present significant hazards,” it cautioned.

The statement is in effect until Saturday, August 31.
