Heavy police presence in Jamestown, police say weapon report 'unfounded' (update, 7 photos)

Street blocked off from James to Carmen's Way after reports of gunfire

2:37 p.m. update:

Despite a heavy police presence on Albert Street West on Wednesday afternoon, a department spokesperson says a report of a weapon in the area is unfounded.

Police closed off an area around the 600-block of Albert Street West at around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday after a report of a firearm in the area, said Lincoln Louttit, spokesperson for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services.

The street was closed off between James Street and Carmen’s Way while tactical officers held the scene with the assistance of the Ballistic Armoured Tactical Transport (BATT).

The scene was cleared by about 2:30, said Louttit.

“Officers responded accordingly and conducted an initial investigation. At this time it is believed the report is unfounded,” said Louttit. “It’s an ongoing investigation at this point there’s no information that we have that there was a weapon in the area.”

Louttit said no arrests have been made as a result of the incident.
