Greyhounds to host charity hockey game with Special Olympians

First ever 'Greyhounds Guardians’ game takes place Wednesday at GFL Memorial Gardens

Members of the community are invited to come out to show their support for local athletes as the Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club hosts its inaugural ‘Greyhounds Guardians’ charity game on Wednesday, March 5.

Game time is 5:15 p.m. at the GFL Memorial Gardens.

Featuring players and coaches from the Greyhounds along with representatives of Sault Ste. Marie Special Olympics Northeastern District, the game will feature on-ice officials, a PA announcer, DJ and more for the full game experience.

The program started in December with the objective of having Greyhounds’ coaching staff and players teach and expand the skills and understanding of hockey among the Special Olympics participants, who range in age from 10 to 63 years old.

The game on Wednesday is a culmination of three months of preparation, including seven practices involving the two groups, the hockey club said in a news release.

The game will feature two hybrid rosters that will pair Greyhounds and their Special Olympic representatives on each team.

Admission to this special event is by donation — a minimum of a toonie ($2) per family.

Proceeds will go to Hound Power Inc., a non-profit organization, to assist in supporting community initiatives.
