***************************** Governor General’s Medal presented to Algoma EMS paramedic and chief
ELLIOT LAKE - Two of Algoma EMS’s members were honoured by the Governor General recently at an awards ceremony in Collingwood, Ontario.
Paramedic Chad Dorion was awarded the Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal on September 29, 2011 during the annual meeting of the Association of Municipal Emergency Medical Services of Ontario.
At the same ceremony, previous medal recipient and Chief of Paramedics, Henry Alamenciak, was awarded the first bar for his medal for 30 years of exemplary service.
The awards were presented on behalf of His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston by Major-General Richard Rohmer, Canada’s most decorated citizen.
The Exemplary Service Medal is part of a national recognition program for people who work in high-risk professions that enhance Canada's public safety through long and outstanding service.
The award, considered to be among the highest honour for paramedics in Canada, was created in 1994 to recognize the meritorious service of long-serving members of the paramedic profession.
It recognizes those individuals who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner, characterized by the highest standards of good conduct, industry and efficiency.
To be considered for this award a paramedic must have completed a minimum of 20 years of exemplary service, including 10 years of service in situations of potential personal risk.
Nominations for the medal are submitted by the paramedic service and are then vetted by the Chancellery, a branch of the Office of the Governor General responsible for the administration of honours.
The Chancellery then submits qualifying nominations to the governor general for final approval.
“On behalf of the Algoma District Services Administration Board, I wish to congratulate both Chad and Chief Alamenciak for the dedicated service they provide to the people of the Algoma District and its visitors,” said Paul Guertin, deputy chief of paramedics.
