The 19th Annual Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow: A Celebration of Lifelong Learning was a remarkable success, drawing in over 5,000 attendees AND establishing it as the largest Pow Wow in the Algoma region.
Hosted at the GFL Memorial Gardens, a newly expanded venue, the Pow Wow brought together dancers, drummers, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, sponsors and community members from across the region and beyond, reaffirming its significance as a vital cultural gathering in Baawaating.
“We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our partners. Seeing thousands of people come together in celebration, honouring traditions and strengthening relationships, is a testament to our cultures' vibrancy and interwoven strength,” said Paul Sayers, Manager of Indigenous Community Relations at Algoma University and lead event organizer.
“The Pow Wow has grown in ways we couldn’t have imagined, and we are excited to continue walking this path together.”
More than just an event, the Pow Wow continues to foster relationships, strengthen connections, and honour traditions. This year’s expanded venue allowed for cultural opportunities in artistry and learning, reinforcing the spirit of unity and renewal at its heart. The gathering stood as a reflection of the incredible talent, collective resilience, and deep cultural pride within the community.
“Chi-miigwech to everyone who made the 19th annual Pow Wow such an incredible success,” said incoming Interim President Dr. Donna Rogers.
“The tremendous support, dedication, and commitment to celebrating Anishinaabe culture and community are truly inspiring. A heartfelt acknowledgement to Paul Sayers and his entire team—your hard work and leadership made this event unforgettable. We are so grateful for all who joined us in this celebration of tradition, resilience, and connection.”
This year’s success was made possible by the dedication of volunteers, staff, sponsors, and community partners who created a welcoming and inclusive space for all. The dancers' energy, the heartbeat of the drums, and the shared spirit of healing and celebration made for an unforgettable experience that will continue into next year’s milestone 20th-anniversary event.
Looking ahead, Algoma University’s 20th Annual Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow: Celebrating Lifelong Learning will take place in February 2026 at the GFL Memorial Gardens.
Led by Algoma University’s Anishinaabe Initiatives Division and the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association, the upcoming Pow Wow promises to be an even greater gathering of culture, knowledge, and kinship, strengthening the collective journey toward understanding and reconciliation.
Miigwech to everyone who made this year’s event a resounding success. We look forward to welcoming you again next year as we continue this journey together.
