Garden River First Nation Coun. Kristy Dawn Jones is facing a single count of assault following an alleged incident that took place in Garden River on Christmas Day.

A Garden River First Nation councillor has been charged with assault following an alleged incident that took place late last year.

Court documents obtained by SooToday reveal that Kristy Dawn Jones was charged by Anishinabek Police Service with a single count of assault this past January.

The alleged assault took place in Garden River First Nation on Dec. 25, 2024. An application for a peace bond has since been brought forward by the alleged victim.

Jones has served as a member of council for the First Nation since 2023. A LinkedIn profile for the band councillor also lists her as justice manager for the Anishinabek Nation, a political organization representing 39 member First Nations in Ontario.

The 48-year-old is being represented in court by Sault-based lawyer Bruce Willson.

Jones’ next court appearance is scheduled for March 18.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
