This Saturday, local postal workers will be out and about, not delivering mail, but gathering donations for the annual Canada Post Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

Non-perishable food donations can be bagged and left near your mailbox for pick up after 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13. Residents will receive a pink flyer in the mail that should be attached to the donation. Please ensure your donation (with flyer attached) is visible from the street.

“The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need and the need this year is greater than ever,” says a news release from Canada Post. “The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day is the largest food drive in the city, collecting food from Heyden to Garden River, to Gros Cap and all neighbourhoods within the city.”

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can do so by making a cheque payable to your agency of choice, and the postal workers will collect that as well.

All donations will go to support local agencies, including the Soup Kitchen Community Centre, the Salvation Army, St. Vincent Place, Harvest Algoma, Women in Crisis, and Pauline’s Place.

“The food drive’s timing is crucial because food banks, shelters, pantries, and soup kitchens are running very low on food donations around this time of the year,” the release says. “They receive donations leading up to Christmas and by springtime, shelves and food supplies are depleted and remain low throughout the summer months. This initiative helps fill that void.”
