The leadership of Batchewana First Nation with the Batchewana First Nation Police is notifying residents, business owners and program managers that there have been several reports of individuals using and manufacturing fraudulent status cards.

"Batchewana First Nation Police have confiscated two of these cards and advise anyone who encounters a suspicious card to notify the police immediately," a news release said.

"Using and manufacturing a fake status card is a criminal offence and individuals using these cards can be charged with fraud and forgery."

Batchewana First Nation program managers have encountered individuals attempting to use these fraudulent cards to access services at the First Nation.

The leadership advises local businesses to be on the lookout for fraudulent cards.

"They are very recognizable to anyone familiar with an authentic status card. These cards are flimsy, are not signed by an authorized person and often the picture does not match the person who is representing it," the release said.

Batchewana First Nation Police ask that if you encounter a questionable card that you make a copy and report it to the police in your area as soon as possible.

The Batchewana First Nation Police can be reached at: 1-888-310-1122.
