An eager crowd gathered yesterday at federal Liberal candidate Christian Provenzano's campaign office.

The public was invited to a meet-and-greet with former NHL star and current Liberal Senator Frank Mahovlich.

While showing his support for the Sault's Liberal candidate, the six-time Stanley Cup champ and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee graciously spoke with fans and signed autographs.

After playing with Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadians, Mahovlich retired from hockey in 1979.

In 1998, he was appointed to the Canadian Senate by then-Prime Minister Jean Chretien.

SooToday.com was able to ask Mahovlich one quick question before he was whisked away to another engagement: What's more exciting, politics or hockey?

"Time has flown by these last 12 years in politics," he told us. "It's been very interesting and an education. Some of the hockey seasons kind of dragged, especially when you were losing," said Mahovlich, laughing. "They went on and on. As long as you were winning, it was okay.

"It's that way in politics, too. As long as we can get Christian to come to Ottawa, it's going to be a lot better."
