Four crews fighting 30-hectare wildfire near Serpent River

A large wildfire east of the Sault is among nine new blazes officials have confirmed since Friday.

Sault Ste. Marie 23 is 30 hectares in size and was being held, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services for Northeast Fire Region said Monday.

There were four FireRanger crews working on the fire which is about 2 km south of Serpent River, AFFES said in a release.

The eight other fires confirmed in recent days are:

• Sudbury 54 (SUD054),  a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is now out.
• North Bay 26 (NOR026), a 2.2 hectare wildland fire that is under control west of Seagull Lake, about 1 km south of Regional Road 522.
• North Bay 27 (NOR027), a 0.4 hectare wildland fire that is under control. This fire is located within French River Provincial Park south of Lake Nipissing, approximately 24 kilometres east of Wolseley Bay.
• Chapleau 18 (CHA018), a 0.5 hectare wildland fire that is not yet under control about 13 km south of Highway 101 and 24 km southwest of Chapleau.
• Wawa 18 (WAW018) was a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is now out.
• Parry Sound 9 (PAR009) was a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is out.
• Sudbury 55 (SUD055) is a 1 hectare wildland fire that is being held. This fire is west of Irwin Lake, about 11.5 km north of Highway 144. There is one FireRanger crew committed to this fire.
• Parry Sound 10 (PAR010) is a 0.2 hectare wildland fire being held. It's on the south end of Sans Souci Island on Georgian Bay. There is one FireRanger crew committed to this fire.

Of the active wildland fires in the northeast, one was not yet under control, two were being held and five were under control.

The fire hazard was moderate to high across the southern half of the region and low for areas north of the Highway 101 corridor. There is an isolated area of low fire hazard around North Bay.
