A historic downtown building that recently underwent a major renovation is back up for sale.
The Superior Health Centre at 765 Queen St. E. — the former PUC headquarters — has been listed by Remax with a sale price of $4.95-million.
The structure has historic value, originally built in 1950 and having served as the Sault Ste. Marie PUC headquarters for decades. An extension was added to the structure in the 1980s.
The PUC moved to its new headquarters at 500 Second Line E. in 2013. The old property sold in 2016 for $775,000, according to land registry records.
Under new ownership, renovations to the Queen Street structure began later that year and was reopened as the Superior Health Centre in 2017.
The accessible building was modernized to include an in-floor heating system, energy efficient lighting and heating, and a new, larger elevator.
The property currently has free parking for visitors to the three floors of professional office space.
Serving mainly as a home to medical offices with long-term tenancies, the building also houses the Algoma Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario office and the JCC Sugar coffee and dessert shop on the main floor.
Local entrepreneur Albert Giommi purchased the building with a view to revitalizing the Sault’s downtown.
“If our downtown can prosper by bringing business back down to the core, that’s all I care about," Giommi stated in a 2017 news release. "It’s time to get people utilizing the downtown again.”
Giommi, in an email to SooToday on Friday, said he wants to sell off the building in order to plan for his retirement.
"I have simply decided I need to work less and enjoy life," Giommi stated.
