FireRanger crew taking on new wildfire north of Wawa

A new wildfire was confirmed in the Wawa fire district on Tuesday, according to Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services for the Northeast Fire Region.

Wawa 16 measures 1.3 hectares and is 1 km north of Lorna Lake about 20 km west of Highway 614, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's firefighting division.

The location is about 25 km northeast of the town of Marathon.

One FireRanger crew is assigned to the fire, the AFFES said.

The other fire confirmed Tuesday is the much larger Cochrane 45, which is being observed at 840 hectares. The fire is about 8 km west of the Ekwan River, and 30 km southwest of Opinnagau Lake in the Far North.

The AFFES said at the time of its Tuesday update there were 15 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region: three were under control, one was not under control and 11 were being observed.

"The fire hazard is predominantly low to moderate across the Northeast Region, with the exception of the northern half of the Cochrane sector which is presenting a moderate to high hazard this afternoon," the AFFES said.

On social media, the MNRF was reminding Ontarians that the province’s wildland fire season continues to Oct. 31 with outdoor burning regulations in effect until that time.
