There were six new wildland fires confirmed in the Northeast Region by early evening on Thursday, according to the latest from Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services.

At the time of Thursday's update, there were 25 active wildland fires in the Northeast Region: one was not under control, seven were being held, seven were under control and 10 were being observed.

The new fires are:

  • Chapleau 16 (CHA016), a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is under control. This fire is east of Colin Lake, about 7 km west of Chapleau. One FireRanger crew is committed to this fire.
  • Sudbury 46 (SUD046) is a 0.4 hectare wildland fire that is being held. This fire is about 4.5 km north of Sellwood. One FireRanger crew is committed to this fire.
  • Sudbury 47 (SUD047) is a 0.2 hectare wildland fire that is under control. This fire is on the west side of Morton Lake, about 9 km northwest of Sellwood. One FireRanger crew is committed to this fire.
  • Sudbury 48 (SUD048) is a 0.1 hectare wildland fire that is under control. This fire is on the south end of Pigeon Lake, about 8 km west of Capreol. One FireRanger crew is committed to this fire.
  • Cochrane 41 (COC041) is a 10 hectare wildland fire that is being observed. This fire is in the Far North, about 74 km southwest of Fort Severn.
  • Cochrane 42 (COC042) is a 50 hectare wildland fire that is being observed. This fire is in the Far North, about 18 km south of Polar Bear Provincial Park.

The fire hazard is high across much of the Northeast Region with some areas seeing a moderate fire hazard, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's firefighting division.

There is an extreme fire hazard for areas around Greater Sudbury, Espanola and north of Kapuskasing. Areas in the Far North are seeing low to moderate fire hazards.
