Three people are in hospital after a morning house fire on Wellington Street East, west of Bruce Street.
Aaron Gavelle, public education officer with the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services, said firefighters responded to the call at about 8 a.m. Monday morning.
"Upon arrival, there was visible smoke from the second floor of the multi-unit residential structure. Firefighters assisted and removed two residents from one of the units on the second level. Fire crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire," said Gavelle in a press release.
He added: "There is significant fire and smoke damage to the second level of the dwelling. Three individuals were transported to hospital."
The Red Cross was called to assist people displaced by the fire and PUC was also called to the scene.
An investigator with the Office of the Fire marshal (OFM) is currently on scene.
"At this time, the incident remains under investigation," said Gravelle.
Broken windows were observed in the rear upstairs units of the tri-plex, hours after firefighters were actively fighting the fire.
Wellington Street is no longer blocked at Bruce Street, as it was in the morning.
