Nearly $2 million in economic development and diversification has been announced from the federal government for the Superior East and Algoma areas.

The federal government is providing $1,825,250 for two projects in the Superior East and Algoma areas, according to a news release.

MP Terry Sheehan said $1.6 million will go to the Superior East Community Futures Development Corp. in support of operating costs for the period of 2025 to 2029. The funding will help SECFDC provide business counselling and investment services to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as leadership in community strategic planning, succession planning, and socio-economic development.

“FedNor investments like these help strengthen communities by providing a foundation of comprehensive support for all kinds of businesses and organizations," Sheehan said in the release. "A diverse economy is a strong economy, and support from the Government of Canada empowers organizations like the Superior East Community Futures Development Corp. to provide critical local tools and resources that enable diverse economic growth. FedNor understands Northern Ontario, and these funds will help locally-owned businesses in the region succeed.”

The remaining $225,250 of FedNor funds will support R&R Watson Inc. in renovating and expanding their Windy Point Lodge facility, a fly-in fishing and hunting destination camp. FedNor’s investment will enable the renovation and expansion of the main lodge, dock, and cabins.

This project will allow Windy Point Lodge to accommodate both more guests and staff. As a fly-in fishing and hunting destination, the lodge will help expand regional tourism by drawing visitors from urban centres to nearby rural communities.

“At Watson's Windy Point Lodge, we’re proud to create unforgettable experiences for our guests," said R&R Watson Inc. president Robert Watson. "The Watson family has been a trusted name in the industry for years, and we always go above and beyond to provide top-notch service for visitors from near and far. Thanks to the recent Tourism Growth loan support from FedNor, we’re excited to keep growing and providing even more incredible experiences for many years to come.”

Funding comes through FedNor’s Community Futures Program, through which FedNor supports 24 Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) located throughout Northern Ontario. FedNor's Tourism Growth Program will deliver $108 million to tourism projects over three years. TGP funds are delivered by Regional Development Agencies and aim to support communities, small and medium-sized businesses, and not-for-profit organizations in developing local tourism products and experiences.
