The Sault Ste. Marie-Algoma Federal NDP riding association is pleased to announce that Laura Mayer has been acclaimed as the party’s candidate for the next federal election.
“The Sault Ste. Marie-Algoma Federal NDP began its candidate search in Oct. 2024, actively engaging with the community to find a strong representative for the riding. With a demonstrated commitment to social justice and community advocacy, Laura Mayer emerged as the unanimous choice,” said Luis Moreno, President of the SSM-Algoma Federal NDP riding association.
Laura Mayer is a dedicated leader and proud Anishinaabekwe from Mississauga First Nation, committed to strengthening Indigenous governance, advancing community-led solutions, and fighting for policies that uplift working people.
Since graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School, Laura has held advisory and management roles with First Nations, working to advance Anishinaabe sovereignty, justice initiatives, environmental protections, infrastructure projects, child welfare reform, and broader community development.
She has not only written and championed First Nations laws that are now national models, but has also been on the ground, re-starting a community garden, organizing Pow-Wows, and assisting with art and theatre outreach.
She currently serves as the Executive Director of the National Council of Indigenous Midwives, where she advocates for culturally safe, community-driven health care and stronger reproductive rights for Indigenous families across Canada. She is also serving her second term as a Councillor for Mississauga First Nation, where she plays a key role in governance, policy development, and community advocacy.
“One of my key priorities is health care accessibility in Northern Ontario,” said Mayer.
“Too many people in Sault Ste. Marie–Algoma struggle to access timely medical care, maternity care, and mental health services close to home. I will fight to expand health care services in the North and ensure no one is left behind.”
Further details on Laura’s campaign kick-off and community engagement initiatives will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
