Expect to see more army vehicles around town this weekend

As part of training exercise, members of the 49th Field Regiment will be seen around Sault Ste. Marie in military vehicles and unloading Howitzer artillery cannons

When you're driving around town this weekend, don't be surprised to see more military vehicles than usual around the city.

Preparing for live fire training later in the fall, the 49th Field Regiment, RCA will be holding "dry" deployments within the city on Oct. 21 and 22.

Dry training involves no live ammunition, but still helps the unit work on their skills before "going live" at an actual training facility.

Military vehicles may be seen towing the unit's C3 105mm Howitzers on local streets.

"This training is practice for later activities at Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) bases and ranges, and allows the unit and personnel to confirm their skills locally, before firing live ammunition at approved training facilities," says a news release from the Department of National Defence. "This important exercise supports year-round readiness training and keeps local Army Reserve members ready to support CAF missions around the world."

Measures are being taken to minimize inconvenience for local residents during the exercises. However, members of the public are asked to be cautious when approaching the military vehicles, especially at intersections, where the vehicles have a larger turning radius.
