This past weekend Emma Piirtoniemi hosted the latest jewelry making workshop as part of the Fresh Art Project presented by the Sault Youth Association.
The Fresh Art Project provides youth aged 12-25 with free professional art instruction.
Emma was excited to teach the small group to create woven ribbon bangles (pictured).
“We have a lot of weaving ahead of us but I enjoy seeing the finished product almost as much as I enjoy seeing the excited expression of the person who made,” said Piirtoniemi.
The workshop was held at the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library and offered a creative and cost effective solution to jewelry making which can often be expensive.
“The Fresh Art Project is a great opportunity for me to get some more experience organizing and planning out the entire lesson for my workshops," she said. "It’s also rare for a local artist to get hired as an instructor in a series that doesn’t charge for supplies, locations or anything. It’s all free.”
Piirtoniemi continued, “Although, I have been supported and given opportunities to instruct and teach by the Art Gallery of Algoma prior to the Fresh Art Project, being hired to do work in your artistic field, it means you've gained the respect and recognition by your community. That makes an artist feel really valued.”
