Large piles of half-open garbage bags strewn behind a vacant Wellington Street West building were cleaned up by Monday, weeks after neighbours say they first started to complain to the city about it.
The rear of the vacant building on 62-68 Wellington St. W. faces on to Edinburgh Street, a mostly residential road in the city's west end. The building was purchased in March of 2021 by a numbered company out of Burlington, 12631521 Canada Inc.
62 Wellington St. W., 68 Wellington St. W. and a parking lot at 42 Wellington St. W. were sold together for a total of $215,000, according to public land registry documents retrieved by SooToday.
When SooToday attended the site on Thursday, neighbours said they were frustrated by repeated calls to the city about holding the new owner of the building to account for the dumping around a large skip bin at the rear of the property. A number of half-open garbage bags with used diapers, food and other waste were seen spilling on to the roadway Thursday afternoon.
An 'unsafe order' notice from the city's by-law department dated July of 2021 is posted on the back wall of the property, stating that the wood roof raters have failed and are not considered structurally sound. It orders work to be completed to fix the issue or for the building to be demolished.
SooToday reached out to the city's chief building official, Freddie Pozzebon, on Thursday and Friday and did not receive a response by Tuesday.
Nels Moxness, president of 12631521 Canada Inc., was contacted on Friday and did not return a call for comment.
By Tuesday the garbage bags were cleaned up, leaving only the skip bin and some construction waste at the rear of the building. It is unclear if the mess was cleaned up by the city or by the owner in Burlington.
