A news release issued by Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services states that the Dundas Street fire was started by a "cooking appliance."
The residence sustained significant smoke and fire damage.
As a precaution, paramedics attended the scene but no injuries were reported.

Just after 6 a.m. on Monday, fire crews responded to a residential fire in the 500 block of Dundas Street.
The home appears to have taken significant damage to its lower portion, especially around the streetside entrance of the structure.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames soon after arriving to the scene.
No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
